1) What is a Dynamic Dedicated Server?
A Dynamic Dedicated Server (DDS) is a hosting solution based on virtual private server (VPS) technology. VPS technology creates Virtual Environments that function as their own separate Dedicated Servers. They are called Dynamic Dedicated Servers because of the ability to seamlessly migrate customers from one virtual private server to another with NO DOWNTIME. On demand, we can dynamically scale a complete hosting environment, OS and all, by "dragging and dropping" it to a different physical host.

Dynamic Dedicated Servers are a form of next-generation hosting solutions we offer to give software companies and small businesses, increased reliability, security and scalability. We use SWsoft’s Virtuozzo software for all of our DDS’s and VPS’s. Virtuozzo is used to fully partition your hosting environment, OS and all, from the physical hardware and file system on which it runs and any other VPS running on the same physical host.

2) What is the difference between a Dedicated Server and Dynamic Dedicated Server?
The biggest difference between a Dedicated Server and Dynamic Dedicated Server is that a Dynamic Server gives you increased functionality for backup and migration. With a Dedicated Server, migration to a more powerful server, as well as backup can sometimes be a painstaking, costly task. However with a DDS, migration is as simple as “dragging and dropping”.

With a DDS you can purchase more VPS’s and run other services on those as if they were all on separate Dedicated Servers. For instance, a Dynamic Dedicated Server with three VPS’s could host an email server, a development server, as well as the companies website, and each service would act as if it was on its own separate server, rather than using Dedicated Servers for each of those services.

3) Is a Dynamic Dedicated Server better than a Dedicated Server?
Many times, DDS technology is seen as a middle step between shared and dedicated hosting. In fact, there are many advantages to its underlying Virtual Private Server technology that make it superior to a traditional dedicated server solution. One key advantage is scalability. A DDS server can be upgraded dynamically, with practically no downtime. For example, when it is time to upgrade your DDS to a more powerful DDS, we can 'drag-and-drop' your entire hosting environment from one server to another.

Compared to the difficult and time-consuming process of transferring domains from a traditional dedicated server to another, DDS technology can significantly lower your cost of ownership. Another advantage of VPS technology is the ease and quality of its backups and restores. When a hosting environment is wrapped in VPS technology it's entire file system can be 'mirrored' and fully restored to the same or even a different physical host. In the case of hardware failure, your entire hosting environment can be restored to a standby server within minutes.

4) Do I get a control panel with my server?
Yes, we include a popular hosting control panel, called Plesk. Plesk is included with each Dedicated and Dynamic Dedicated server, as well as each additional VPS virtual environment that is on a DDS.

5) What can I do with a Dynamic Dedicated server?
Since a DDS is a dedicated server with increased functionality, there is almost no limit to how it can be used. A DDS can host a small business web site or a complex, database driven online store or corporate intranet. A DDS also makes an excellent development platform or dedicated mail server, or it can even be used for both at the same time, using a VPS for each of them!

Here are a few things you can do with a DDS:

  • Host eBusiness applications
  • Custom application development & hosting
  • Host web-based calendaring and scheduling
  • Offsite data storage
  • Host a corporate intranet
  • Host a web-based CRM
  • Manage email services

6) Is there any thing that can’t be done with a Dynamic Dedicated Server?
Dynamic Dedicated Servers can be used for exactly the same thing as a Dedicated Server. Anything that can be done with a Dedicated Server can be done with a DDS.

7) Do I have root access to my server?
Yes. You have full administrative control over your hosting environment, regardless of whether you choose a Dedicated Server or a Dynamic Dedicated Server. Every VPS has its own complete directory structure and set of dedicated services (web server, mail server, etc.). You can fully configure your server at the root level and even reboot your VPS without affecting any other VPS on the same physical server.

8) How many Dynamic Dedicated Servers can share a physical host?
Using Virtuozzo’s 'fair share' technology, RAM, CPU and bandwidth minimums are set for each VPS so each VPS is not competing unchecked for the same physical resources. Thus, the overall performance of your DDS is not a simple function of how many Virtual Private Servers are on the same physical host or even the computing power of that host. Each type of VPS is engineered to deliver top performance.
